It is always interesting to learn of someone’s journey with photography. Their introduction, their accumulation of knowledge, their development and journey. Their methodology in taking photos and their drive to excel. This was the case with our multi award-winning speaker Stephen Bell LRPS. A landscape photographer, and proprietor of Scotland Captured. Originally from south- east London. He worked for many years as both a designer and technician in London’s West End, working on many of the musical productions. In the late 90’s, Stephen moved to Edinburgh, this experience of design and creativity has assisted him to develop his skills as a photographer.

Now with a 12-year photographic career behind him in landscape photography, Stephen is one of the most pre-eminent landscape photographers working in Scotland from his base in Dalkeith.

Stephen has produced 3 books, capturing Scotland behind the lens. Over the past 4 years has undertaken 55 talks, some in America. He has always been a Nikon user, currently utilising a Z7 alongside a D7100.

Stephen’s talk took the members through a photographic journey behind the lens, across the length and breadth of Scotland. Portraying the timeless beauty of Scotland’s landscapes. From majestic Highland peaks to serene lochs and rugged coastlines, each image capturing a fleeting moment in Scotland’s amazing scenic backdrop. He is very fortunate to have a front row seat at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, displaying a range of outstanding images of the event at the castle.

What sets Stephen’s work apart is his ability to capture the essence of Scotland’s landscapes in a way that is both timeless and contemporary, blending traditional techniques with modern technology to create images that are both breathtaking and thought provoking. His photographs are characterised by their rich, moody colours, dramatic lighting, and powerful compositions, which combine to create a sense of depth and emotion. This is reflected in winning both Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year and Landscape Photographer of the Year.

All the members thoroughly enjoyed seeing his wonderful images, together with his information behind them and sharing his knowledge with everyone on the evening.
