This year’s winner of the Margaret Coull Trophy is Neil Taylor, with his image of “Ant on a Flower.” Pictured is Neil being awarded the trophy by this year’s judge, Mike Martin, a naturalist from Anstruther who’s a keen birdwatcher, specializing in photographing the rock pipits that can be found scrambling over the rocks at his local beach.

The theme for the competition each year is “Nature in the Garden,” referring to any flower, bird, animal, fungus, tree — or anything else — you would reasonably expect to find in a British garden.
The theme reflects in part the time the club used to spend in Margaret’s garden each year, when she would host an annual summertime get-together. Margaret was a keen gardener, as well as lover of wildlife and especially Bengal Tigers.
For this year’s judging, Mike reviewed 40 entries. Here were his top five:
- 5th place: John Peacock with “Foxglove Bee”
- 4th place: David Ogden with “Hard Winter”
- 3rd place: Philip Graham with “Moths Mating”
- 2nd place: Monica Vella with “Cactus Spotting”
- 1st place: Neil Taylor with “Ant on a Pink Dahlia”
Many thanks to Mike for his very appreciated judging efforts.
